ALDER
Alder invites the eye to pause, the hand to linger, the mind to wander. It has long held quiet power in Coast Salish and Puget Sound tribal traditions. In springtime, the inner bark was gently scraped and eaten. Medicinally, alder bark was steeped in tea or applied as a poultice to soothe inflammation, heal sores, poison oak reactions, and ease pain. Alder smoke, too, was integral, used to preserve salmon over cool embers, infusing the air and the abundance it sheltered. That legacy of medicine and nourishment and protection—flows through the Alder pattern. It’s not surface-deep ornament, but an invitation to presence rooted in place, ritual, and reciprocity.
